Floods in Assam kill 46, affect over 1.6 million people in 27 districts

The flood situation in Assam remains critical as rising waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries continue to inundate new areas, killing nearly 46 people and affecting over 1.6 million.

According to the flood bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 16,25,089 people spread across 2,800 villages in 27 districts have been affected by the deluge.

Two more people drowned in Sonitpur district, while one person died each in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Biswanath, Morigaon and Darrang districts, taking the total death toll this year to 46. Besides, three people were reported missing in Sivasagar, Golaghat and Sonitpur.

The second wave of floods has hit 29 districts, with Dhubri being the worst hit and Upper Assam being severely affected. Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the flood-affected areas in his constituency Dibrugarh. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday conducted an on-site assessment of the flood management efforts.
