The results of the Household Expenditure Survey 2022/2023 show that the average annual expenditure on housing was 9,390 euros, while food was 3,091 euros and transport around 2,888 euros.

The INE research also found that spending on restaurants and accommodation represented 8.6% of average annual household expenditure.

The research also indicates that a “smaller share of household expenditure” went on culture, recreation, sport and leisure, and education in predominantly rural areas.

The study also concluded that average annual expenditure was higher in the Lisbon metropolitan area (26,891 euros) and that the Algarve exceeded the national average.
